15 years later: Our Canadian adventure
2025-02-26
15 years ago, we left everything behind for Canada: a crazy decision or the best choice of our lives?
Leaving one’s country and taking the whole family on such an adventure was no small project. And yet, the stars aligned to make this life change easier. We decided to take the leap with no safety net and resigned from our respective jobs. I was working at heaven | Hopscotch Groupe, and their response took me by surprise: “You know what? We don’t have an office in Canada—why not give it a try?” And just like that, I found myself heading the only North American office of the HOPSCOTCH Groupe. I signed my first clients (Air France, KLM, Birks), and the office ran for a while before I moved on to something else, closing this little piece of Paradise in Montreal.
My children have grown. My eldest now works for LG2, an advertising agency (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree), while my youngest has an accent I don’t always understand and dreams of working in aerospace. They feel Canadian in France and French in Canada. Navigating a dual cultural identity is no easy task. Will they, in turn, venture to other parts of the world? That’s what I sincerely hope for them, because there is no greater enrichment than uprooting oneself.
Today, I am a freelancer and continue to work with event agencies in Canada, the U.S., and France. This journey has taught me one essential thing: you should never be afraid to take a leap of faith, to leave everything behind. Sometimes, reason holds us back, but the signs are there—clear as day—and all it takes is the courage to follow them. The unknown is scary, but more often than not, it leads to the most beautiful paths. If my daughters ever decide to spread their wings and move abroad, I will only be proud—because leaving is growing.
