The Value of Reinventing the Wheel
2025-02-10
If there is one adage that I cannot stand, it's the one claiming that there is no point in reinventing the wheel. In my profession, innovation is essential. It's not about redoing what already exists, but adapting solutions to specific needs: client context, event constraints, budget. Sometimes people suggest equipping staff with a simple tablet using Google Forms for guest reception. No thank you. I prefer creating elegant, practical, less intrusive solutions enhanced with features that truly facilitate the work of teams.
Same philosophy for web development. Why overload a CMS with plugins for a simple RSVP function? Why use Bootstrap on a mini-site with basic needs? Or integrate a 500kb JavaScript library to validate a form? Count me out.
In an era where AI offers us standardized solutions and approaches, I remain convinced that each project deserves its own reflection, its own design, its own technology. This conviction comes from my beginnings: as a teenager, I developed demos on Atari ST, optimizing each processor cycle to maximize performance. This experience shaped my vision: optimizing resources, weight, time, and user experience. Because I believe that reinventing gives us the chance to innovate and improve.
So yes, I prefer to rethink the wheel... but always to make it roll better.
